|Throughout the year there are several in-town festivities that are linked to the religious or civic calendar, Easter, Independence, etc. During the month of august, the Sisal Festival takes place at the old Customs building with several cultural activities. Most notably is the fishermen´s boat procession of their patron, the “Cristo Negro” toward the end of the month.
On Sunday afternoons, the local teams “Atlantida” and “Tigres del Mar” have their regular matches. Also, several hunting and fishing contests or sports competitions take place in Sisal. In nearby towns, celebrations include bullfights.
The Yucatan Peninsula offers visitors a vast variety in terms of excursions. So, if your plan is not to stay and idle the day away on a recliner or hammock at the hotel, but travel around, you can visit archeological areas, like Dzibilchaltun, 9 miles north of Merida, on the road towards Progreso; or the innumerable “Haciendas” and “Cenotes” (sacred wells) scattered around the landscape. You can simply decide to visit the small towns, stroll around their markets and admire their markets and admire their people, still dressed in their particular way.
